An attractive 18th century 1st period Worcester teacup and saucer decorated in Japanese Kakiemon style on a blue scale ground c1775.
Very popular on Worcester porcelain from c1765 this style of decoration is a direct copy of earlier Japanese porcelain and consists of gilt reserved panels on an underglaze scale blue ground. The panels are painted in bright enamels with Japanese style flowers and leaf formations, one panel on the saucer is also painted with a “banded hedge” motif first seen on early Worcester porcelain from c.1752/53.
For similar decoration see Bonhams three part Sale of the Zorensky collection from 2004-2006. Lot 158 in Part 11 being one of several examples to be seen across the three sales.
Both cup and saucer are marked to the base with an underglaze blue fretted square in imitation of earlier Oriental marks.
The cup stands 4.9cm tall and measures 9.9cm in diameter including the handle. The saucer measures 13cm in diameter.
Condition – The saucer is in perfect condition with fine gilding and little sign of rubbing. The cup has had a section broken out around the handle and successfully re-glued into place. Otherwise condition is very good with fine gilding.
