A 1st period Worcester porcelain toy coffee cup, hand painted with the Prunus Root pattern c1754-56.
This pattern was used from c1754 up to c1780, however the light inky blue and controlled painting of this example indicate an early date. Later examples of this pattern are painted in a darker blue and have a rushed feel to the painting.
The Cup measures 5.1cm in diameter including the handle and stands 4cm tall.
Undamaged. Manufacturing flaw to the side from the kiln.
Marked to the base with a workman’s mark.
These early examples are much rarer than the later Crescent marked pieces. Usually on early porcelain a larger size is an indication of a later date. These Prunus root miniatures buck that with the earlier workman’s marked pieces being larger.
From a private collection in Suffolk.
