Very Rare Longton Hall Black Rock and Birds Pattern Mug c1755-56

A very rare Longton hall cylindrical mug with scroll handle. Hand decorated in coloured enamels with a bird perched on a black rock, with another on a branch c1755-56.

The mug measures 10.3cm in diameter including the handle and stands 9cm tall.

Small chip and manufacturing glaze flaw to the base. No other damage, faults or restoration (the line seen in images is just light reflection and not a crack).

Unmarked.

Please see there is still Life at Longton Hall by Nicholas Brankin-Frisby, pg 106/107 for another example of this mug, although missing the bird sat on the rock. Nicholas states” this is a rare shape at Longton Hall, with him knowing of only two other examples. One sold at in the Watney part I, lot 57. The Watney example is decorated with the more commonly found fence, holed root peony pattern. Another mug of this shape is known with a transfer print, which was also sold in Watney part I, and later resold at Bonhams.

Nicholas also states “The colour off the glaze and the thick potting point to the transitional period”
