A Very Rare 18th Century Lowestoft porcelain leaf moulded butterboat, hand painted with a trailing flower border and floral spray to the interior c1760-65.
The butterboat measures 7.1cm in diameter by 9.8cm in length by 3.7cm tall.
It is in excellent condition without damage or restoration. There is a pin hole to the glaze, this has caused a spot of staining to the interior of the paste, which can only be seen with a light. There is also a mould line running from the rim to the foot (where the hole is) this is not damage but part of the manufacturing process.
Marked to the foot with a decorator’s mark.
This butterboat is so rare there are no examples in the Norwich castle museum’s collection, it also doesn’t feature in Geoffery Godden’s Books on Lowestoft. There is a later example in the Victoria and Albert Museum Lowestoft butterboat in V and A A similar example painted with a different pattern can be found on page 52 of Variety in Lowestoft Porcelain by Margaret Corson. An example in this pattern was sold by Zoe Sprake in October 2017 for £368 including commission, but this was broken into two and re stuck.
