An extremely rare Worcester porcelain slop bowl finely painted in underglaze blue with the Crescent Moon pattern c1753-54.
The bowl measures 15cm in diameter and stands 7cm tall.
Display condition is excellent with the bowl having had professional restoration to a rim chip and a long body crack. Unlike some restoration techniques this bowl shows no sign of over-zealous spray being used. The restoration is limited strictly to the damaged areas only, resulting in a fine quality bowl being shown in a near perfect original condition.
The bowl has a fine, complex workmans mark to the base.
See BFS 1.B.4 for a large punch pot in the same pattern.
Four examples of the this pattern can also be seen in Simon Spero’s 2011 catalogue No.’s 17-20.
A fine early small coffee pot, a very rare guglet, a large waisted mug and a beer jug.
These four pieces were all from Simon’s own collection and his description of the of the variation in adapting the pattern to different shapes is fascinating.
Rosie Sharp, a well known Canadian collector of early 18th century porcelain, had only one example of this pattern and was recorded as saying that she would ” jump into a taxi” to get another example. Potentially a very expensive mode of transport to use to buy a piece of rare porcelain if it happened to be in Leicester, England.
