A very rare Lowestoft porcelain soft paste porcelain squat shaped sparrow beak jug, hand painted with a Chinaman and bridge house pattern. This shape jug is rarely found on Lowestoft porcelain, the usual shape being pear shaped. The pattern of this jug is also very rare. It is featured in Lowestoft porcelain in the Norwich castle museum, but only on a waster. I know of one other example, currently in a private collection in Lowestoft. There are no examples of this pattern within the Victoria and Albert museum. It is the 1st time I have come across this pattern or border.
The jug measures 8.2cm in diameter including the handle and stands 7.7cm tall.
it is in good display condition without chips or restoration. The handle kick has been lost during the manufacturing process, and has been over painted and glazed. There are also 4 small areas to the rim without glaze. These are not damage but factory flaws. Two hairline cracks run from the rim either side of the jug, the longest of these is 4cm in length.
Unmarked.
A Jug in this shape was offered at Bonhams in 2018 with an estimate of £600-800 Lowestoft Squat Shaped jug decorated in polychrome
There are no examples of this shape jug within the Norwich Castle, or Victoria and Albert Museum collections
