Category:

A very rare Longton Hall small bowl, probably a sugar bowl c1755-60.

Beautifully hand painted in a pale underglaze blue with the Ruined Castle pattern featuring a battlemented castle with a windblown pennant on a tall mast and a Chinese river scene with a tall man standing in a fishing boat. The fishing boat is repeated on the inside of the bowl superbly painted.

This style of painting is associated with the so-called castle painter believed to be John Hayfield. His work can also be found on Longton Hall polychrome wares with castles being painted in wonderful detail.

See Goss P.41 No.59 for a saucer with an identical pattern.

The bowl measures 10.5cm in diameter and stands 5cm high.

Condition is very good with just two short (5 and 6mm) hairlines and minor chipping to the rim.

Unmarked.
