An extremely rare Lunds Bristol large shell dish, hand painted with the “Chinaman With Fan” Pattern c1749.
The dish measures 13cm in diameter by 14.2cm tall.
Excellent condition, except for a firing crack to the bottom and glaze bubbles to the base from manufacture.
Unmarked
Collectors lable to the back, Scutorum (Latin for Sheilds).
Once thought to be Liverpool and then reattributed to Limehouse, chemical analysis of closely related dishes has revealed these to be of the Mg-P-Pb type Therefore unlikely that these were produced at Limehouse. This and similar large scallop dishes with identical decoration are discussed by Ray Jones, pp.260-262. Jones concludes that a Lund’s attribution is most likely.
