An early Worcester teabowl and saucer finely hand painted with the “Warbler” pattern and dating to c.1754.
This pattern spanned the period from 1754 – 1760 but this example dates from the earliest period which is clearly shown with the excellent quality of the painting and the wonderful pale blue/grey colouring. Later examples are darker in colour and the painting is less well defined.
This example is also smaller in size and more finely potted when compared to later pieces.
The saucer measures 12.0 cm in diameter whilst the tea bowl measures 7.0 cm across and stands 4.1 cm tall.
Both tea bowl and saucer are marked to the base with an early workman’s mark in underglaze blue. The saucer also has an incised line inside the foot rim indicative of the so-called “scratch cross” period, again confirming the early date.
Condition is superb with no chips, cracks or restoration. A fine example of early Worcester blue and white porcelain at its very best
