Rare Richard Chaffers White Bird on a Fence Pattern Cream Jug c1758-60

Availability: In stock

A rare Liverpool porcelain cream jug from the factory of Richard Chaffers c1760.

The raised lip and pixie ear handle are unusual features and enhance the quality of this jug.

Decorated in bright polychrome enamels with a bird sitting on a fence in the style of Bianco supra Bianco, a technique first used on Italian porcelain, which translated means White on White. This use of white enamels to highlight was used on several Liverpool factories including Philip Christians manufactory.

The jug measures 8.2cm across spout and handle and stands 8.9cm tall.

Condition is excellent with just a tiny chip to the spout.

See Maurice Hillis Liverpool porcelain Pg 258 6.94 for a Christians bowl with a very similar pattern. Maurice states that this pattern is sometimes difficult to differentiate on Chaffers and Christians porcelain.
