An early Lowestoft coffee cup decorated with an underglaze blue landscape pattern and later clobbered in overglaze red and gilt c1762-65.
The cup measures 8cm in diameter including handle and stands 5.9cm tall.
Condition is very good with just tiny nibbles to the rim.
Painters mark inside foot.
This cup is interesting due to its early date of original manufacture (shown by the early handle shape) and over glaze decoration. The fashion to decorate blue and white porcelain with onglaze red was much later than the cups manufacture. Suggesting that either this cup sat on a shelf unsold, or its owners had it redecorated later when the fashion for Imari decoration was all the rage.
