A fine Worcester coffee cup with grooved loop handle hand painted in puce enamels with a large peony flower and further trailing leaves and flowers. A single line matching inside puce border and a gilt rim completes the decoration c1770.
This form of decoration is thought to have been done outside the factory, possibly in the workshop of James Giles though there is no conclusive evidence to support this.
See Bonhams auction of the Zorensky Collection Part 11 Lot217 for a sparrow beak jug with identical decoration.
The cup measures 8cm in diameter including the handle and stands 6.5cm tall.
Condition is excellent with no chips or cracks. There is slight rubbing to the gilt rim from age and usage.
