Lowestoft Good Cross Chapel Pattern Coffee Cup c1770-80

£245.00

Availability: In stock

A Lowestoft porcelain coffee cup, transfer printed with a pattern known as the Good Cross Chapel pattern c1770-80.

The Good cross chapel was destroyed by the sea and no trace remains of it Today. However, John Bussey noted that the buildings used to make up this pattern can be found today within the town. It is therefore possible that this pattern is not a chapel after all, but buildings associated with the fishing industry, without which the Town wouldn’t of had the money to support a porcelain factory.

The cup measures 7.7cm in diameter including the handle and stands 6cm tall.

It displays well but has two chips to the inside of the rim and a 15mm hairline crack. There is no other damage or any restoration.

Unmarked.

A Jug in this pattern can be found in the Victoria and Albert museum’s collection
