A superb large Bow plate finely hand-painted in underglaze cobalt blue with a lotus and bamboo pattern within a flower head and diaper pattern border c1760.
Whilst this pattern is often found on Bow plates the size of this particular plate is unusually rare.
See Bonhams sale of the Sutherland Collection in October 2007 Lot 39 for a similarly decorated small pudding bowl.
The reverse of the plate has an outer single line blue border and an inner double line blue border. A workman’s mark , possibly number 17, can be seen inside the foot rim.
The plate measures a massive 29.7 cm in diameter,
Display condition is excellent with three small rim chips and some slight glaze rubbing to the inside of the border. Viewed from the side the plate shows slight warping due to the large size posing firing problems in the kiln. In our view this actually adds character to this fabulous piece of English porcelain.
